From the arc of the light in the water, Larceny could tell that the sun was rising. Which meant that it was time for her to head back up to the boat. She needed the time to dry off and reform her legs before Duke woke up and spotted her. Swimming back to the harbor, she grabbed the anchor lines and started pulling herself upwards. With her strength, it was only a few minutes of hand-over-hand before she was peeking over the edge of the boat.

Good. Still empty.

With a mighty flip, she hauled herself over the edge, landing on the deck. Her tail flicked water over the wood, reaching for the towel she'd stashed to start the long process of drying herself off.

I just realized that I never did one of these for my new girl (probably because she didn't have a name yet and then my life fell apart) and that I really, really should.

So, Larceny! She is from the Korean drama, Legend of the Blue Sea, an absolutely delightful show that's basically "What if Korea remade Leverage but as a romance and with mermaids?" And, as a show, it is much better than their actual remake of Leverage, which continues to disappoint me to no end. This info post not SOLELY an excuse for gifs I swear )

One last thing, included outside of the cut because it's important: right now, she's hiding the fact that she is a mermaid. I'm willing to have people discover her secret, but seeing her as a mermaid will require a bit of OOC negotiation and a willingness for memory editing, at least for the next few months. But it's definitely something I would love to play around with, so I'm game if you are!

Larceny looked at the TV, making distressed noises. She was clutching the remote, sometimes using it to change the channel, but to no avail.

None of her friends were there.

No matter what channel she turned it to, the TV kept showing the same people: a man in red, a woman in red, several big creatures with terrifying horns and sometimes a nose that looked like it had been dipped in blood. Those were clearly some kind of predator and they seemed to be obeying the man and woman? While tiny children ran about?

Had they killed her usual friends? Why were none of her friends about?!

"Duke! Duke! Help!"

Today was the best day she'd spent on land so far.

Last night, she'd found this place - an miniature ocean on land! She'd snuck inside just as the tiny suns had all gone out inside the building, leaving only the ones that were illuminating all of the seascapes. At first, she'd been too bemused to do anything but wander through. There one was section devoted all to jellyfish that made her laugh with their dreamy conversation and another full of sharks that she'd quickly scurried past while they eyed her with silent menace. Sharks rarely spoke much. Just stared.

Then she'd found one that was all warm water and fish and coral reefs that almost reminded her of home. Best of all? It was filled with any number of different kinds of fish, from tiny little ones that darted around to fat, slow ones that lurked towards the bottom. *Ah, I'm so relieved,* she'd said with a hungry gulp. *I thought I was going to die from hunger.*

Aquariums are basically buffets for mermaids )

Once again, the tiny suns went out in the building and all the humans went home. She knew she couldn't stay in here forever - humans seemed to get mad about a lot of things and she would get mad if someone came through and ate all her fish she'd been saving - but what could one more night here hurt? And it felt good to be able to get some time in just swimming around and stretching her fins.

She'd figure out what to do...later. After another good meal and some time in nice, warm water. Ahhh. She'd missed this.

[For the troublemakers, please!]
outofherdepths: Jun Ji-hyun (Paper Money)
It was hard to believe there were this many humans in the entire world. There were more humans in this place than a school of anchovies. And, like a school, they were always traveling in clumps; talking to each other and to the brightly shining boxes in their hands, or while traveling in the big, noisy boxes like the one she'd traveled in yesterday.

In which we learn about mugging )

Curious, she followed, just to see the one in charge holding out her hand expectantly. The hunted girl look scared and held out a trembling hand filled with--paper! The paper that didn't get people yelled at! They were calling it...money? The group of girls scattered, with a "Thanks," "Thank you!" and "See you tomorrow," leaving the hunted one to make her way back to the main road.

Huh. That was how humans got food paper--money. Okay. She could do that.

[NFB for off-island shenanigans and for...well, me.]

The cell door swung open. "Your twenty-four hours of holding are up," Calvin announced. It had been significantly longer, but he was betting she didn't know that. "You're free to go."

From her nest of tissues on the floor, the young woman looked up at him, blinking in curiosity. Had he come with more food? She'd like that, please.

Oh this was gonna be an ADVENTURE. )

"Oh!" Ralph said, reaching into the backseat to grab the box of tissues they'd brought with them. "Here you go. Don't wanna forget..." He straightened up and looked around. "...these..."

She was gone.

"Oh no."

outofherdepths: Jun Ji-hyun (Mermaid: Storm Silhouette)
For once it wasn't a beautiful day off the coast of Ibiza, Spain, nestled in the warmth of the Balearic Seas. Parents pulled their children off the beach as the winds picked up, hawkers of wares and street foods bundled up their portable shops and trundled away to spend a few hours tucked away in areas the tourists didn't venture, to while away the storm with cheap drinks and hot food. The sunset was lost behind roiling clouds and when they finally parted, rain came down in sheets. It wasn't dark, though, with lightning flickering across the sky and the tourists all agreed that even the storms were gorgeous out here in paradise.

Beneath the waves, the storm announced itself very differently. )

She woke up sprawled along a small beach. )

Once more she breached the surface and pulled herself onto the shore. Once again, her scales rippled, this time vanishing as her fin turned back to human legs. She was skin from forehead to feet and she once again shivered in the cold. Picking a direction at random, she started to walk. It couldn't be too long before she found humans, right? They practically swarmed the beach every day.

They had to be around here somewhere.
