Incredibly Belated Info Post!
Feb. 17th, 2020 02:28 pmI just realized that I never did one of these for my new girl (probably because she didn't have a name yet and then my life fell apart) and that I really, really should.
So, Larceny! She is from the Korean drama, Legend of the Blue Sea, an absolutely delightful show that's basically "What if Korea remade Leverage but as a romance and with mermaids?" And, as a show, it is much better than their actual remake of Leverage, which continues to disappoint me to no end.

Meet Larceny! She is a mermaid from the Balearic Seas, right off the coast of Ibiza, Spain. Though she's somewhere in her early thirties by human standards, Larceny has lived her entire life underwater. While she is a perfectly functional adult mermaid, bright and popular within her pod, some things don't translate well on land.
...As some of you might have noticed.
Currently, she is a figurative fish out of literal water, living on Duke's boat mostly out of curiosity's sake and because the land has a lot of food available. And if there is one thing you can say about Larceny, it's that she's very, very food-motivated.
She may not understand the finer points of etiquette, property law, or clothing, but she understands that warm, seasoned food that is just given to you is waaaaay better than having to spend a lot of time chasing after fish and fighting with sharks for dinner.

Also, she ended washed up in Selkie Lake after a terrible storm and has yet to figure out how to get back home. Or even where 'home' is in relation to Fandom!
She's making the best of it, though.

Being a mermaid, even one nominally on dry land, does come with several advantages:
*Incredible strength. As seen in this clip, she can kick and punch people through the air, and leave an indent of her knuckles in a wooden door. (My favorite part is how she basically gives no fucks about knocking dudes down, like the guy on the bike she pushes down the stairs). Something something pseudo-scientific explanation about more pressure under the water, yadda.
*Accelerated healing! Larceny is very sturdy. She heals from a fractured leg within days. She gets hit full on by a car and only has a fractured leg. She gets shot in the chest and survives!
*Shape-shifting! She can change between human form and mermaid form at will, though she will always revert to mermaid when her legs get wet, including by the rain. This is a power that comes on in adulthood; she cannot change to legs when she is a child. Which will make wee!tiny weekends fun.
*Memory-reading and erasing! She has the ability to touch someone and erase their memories if she wants to. In doing so, she will be able to see the memory for herself, knowing exactly what it's about, even if she doesn't understand the full context. She can either delete the whole memory or simply erase certain aspects of it and leave the individual's brain to fill in the missing bits with whatever makes the most logical sense. This is something that will only be done with OOC knowledge and permission. It can also be temporary, depending on whether or not there is something to trigger the memory coming back.
*Mermaid thoughts! Mermaids don't talk underwater. Instead, they share "mermaid thoughts" or basic telepathy. They hear each other's inner monologue/surface thoughts. She can communicate with mermaids, anyone who was descended from a mermaid, and other non-mermaid marine life. If someone falls in love with her, they will also gains the ability to hear her thoughts, though she won't be able to hear theirs in return.

*Accelerated learning! In one night, she manages to learn English, martial arts, and several other skills, just by watching TV. She doesn't know much, but show her something once and she'll be a pro.
*Her tears turn into valuable pearls when they fall! In canon, she ends up making money by watching sad TV shows and crying into a plastic bag. Times when she cries for sheer joy, she cries priceless pink pearls.
*Mermaid oil is incredibly valuable; it can burn and never go out. Unfortunately, you get mermaid oil the same way you get fish oil, so umm, here's hoping no one ever decides they need a vial of ever-burning mermaid oil.
*If she doesn't find true love by...a time...in the human world, she must either return to the sea (presumably never to return???) or her heart will harden and she will die. In the time leading up to this, she has little attacks where her heart hurts and she can't breathe. Fortunately, that time is never specified in canon, so I can decide how long that is. Or I'll rework "true love" because there are a million different kinds of love out there.
But how could anybody not love this?
<
One last thing, included outside of the cut because it's important: right now, she's hiding the fact that she is a mermaid. I'm willing to have people discover her secret, but seeing her as a mermaid will require a bit of OOC negotiation and a willingness for memory editing, at least for the next few months. But it's definitely something I would love to play around with, so I'm game if you are!
